Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute

The Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute (NGNRI) is a cutting-edge research center aimed at medical innovation, and a community hub serving and uniting the NF community. Rising within Detroit’s flourishing medical district, the institute occupies a prominent floor of the Henry Ford + MSU Research Facility, a new center for medical discovery. NGNRI was designed not only to accelerate research in neurofibromatosis but also to stand as a living tribute to Nick Gilbert, whose legacy of resilience and optimism inspired a design vision rooted in inclusion, equity, and universal access.

Universal design served as the guiding principle from the very beginning, as those with Neurofibromatosis can have a wide range of varying physical and cognitive ability. Every decision was measured by how it could enhance dignity, independence, and choice for all who enter. Corridors are wide and clear, encouraging ease of mobility. Seating was selected and arranged to accommodate a range of postures and physical needs without calling attention to difference. Lighting schemes are layered to reduce glare and visual fatigue, offering a gentle environment for those with sensory sensitivities. Technology is integrated into meeting and gathering spaces so that every participant, regardless of ability, can contribute fully to the conversation. The result is an environment where accessibility does not feel like an add-on but an essential expression of hospitality and care.
